1990s
In August 1993 the first nationally branded food outlet opened in the Union. Wendy's was successful from the outset. In 1994 the Union Board unanimously recommended that the operation of Union Dining Services be contracted to an outside vendor. That recommendation was approved, and the changeover took place on June 1, 1995.
Significant interior refurbishing in the mid-90s transformed the 50s Rec Center into a modern leisure entertainment venue named Union Underground. Another phased project transformed the 70s food court and included replacing most of the main level floor with multicolored slate similar to the original floor. A complete building sign system was also installed and includes tasteful neon elements.
