New UGS Student Checklist

You’ve made a great decision to enroll at The University of Texas at Austin and to start your college experience with the School of Undergraduate Studies. We’re excited to meet you and look forward to helping you get successfully enrolled at the university.

  1. Formally accept your admission.
Be sure to visit the Be A Longhorn web site and make your admission official. From that site, you can accept by paying your enrollment deposit, upgrading your UT EID and password, and submitting your final high school and any community or junior college transcripts.
  2. Sign up for Summer Orientation.
Students who attend summer orientation register first. In other words, you have a better chance of getting the classes you want if you attend summer orientation instead of waiting until the fall orientation program in August. To sign up, just go to the new Student Services web site.
  3. Apply for financial aid
You may need to apply for financial aid and find campus housing.

  4. Attend Summer Orientation.
During the four days of summer orientation, you’ll have a chance to learn more about programs offered by the School of Undergraduate Studies, meet with an academic advisor to determine your first fall semester schedule, complete placement exams for subjects like math, English Composition, and foreign language, and register for your fall courses. You’ll also have the opportunity to get to know other newly-admitted students.
  5. Pay your tuition and fee bill, then enjoy the rest of your summer.
Be sure to pay your bill on time. Students who fail to pay on time are dropped from their fall schedule of courses. So, first pay that bill, and then relax, enjoy the rest of your summer break, and start getting ready for your first semester in college. Consider reading a book as part of the Freshman Reading Round-Up, and come ready to discuss the book with members of our Academy of Distinguished Teachers.
  6. Move in.
Get settled into your new place, whether it is a dorm room, apartment, or house. Take some time to walk around campus and locate your classrooms, too. Check into the bus schedule, as it may prove valuable in getting around campus and around Austin.
  7. Attend Gone to Texas.
On the evening before fall classes begin, be part of a UT Austin tradition by going to a giant welcome party in your honor! Put on your School of Undergraduate Studies T-Shirt (provided during summer orientation) and attend Gone to Texas. It’s a great opportunity to meet other Undergraduate Studies students, see your advisor, and meet the Dean. We’ll be serving up some great food and kicking off the semester in style!
