“In comparing myself to peers in my graduate program, the Bridging Disciplines Programs have given me an advantage in understanding my clients’ diagnoses and more importantly, in understanding and implementing appropriate therapy strategies.”
How did your BDP experience influence your career path and interests?
For one Connecting Experience, I interned at the Capitol School of Austin and worked closely with a speech-language pathologist in a classroom. This helped me understand the tasks involved in this particular work setting, and solidified my interest to work with school-aged children and learn about literacy and language disorders.
What do you value most about your BDP experience?
The Connecting Experiences combined with my mentoring relationships have been the most helpful aspect of my BDP experience. In comparing myself to peers in my graduate program, the BDPs have given me an advantage in understanding my clients’ diagnoses and more importantly, in understanding and implementing appropriate therapy strategies.
In what ways did an interdisciplinary education prepare you for what you are currently doing?
I understand the importance of utilizing strategies from a variety of different disciplines to assist my clients in achieving their goals. For example, I have taken the time to learn about different technology available for augmentative communication. I have also utilized occupational therapy strategies to help meet the sensory needs of my clients that allow them to focus on language therapy.
