Ethics and Leadership alumni have gone on to serve in the Peace Corps, to work in consulting, education, public service, non-profit organizations, business, and in a range of other roles. They have also enrolled in a variety of graduate and professional school programs, including programs in Law, Peace Studies, Public Affairs, and Public Health. Cody Cheek
Government, Graduated Spring 2007
Cody combined a major in Government, membership in the Army ROTC, and a BDP in Ethics and Leadership with the goal of attending law school and entering the Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program. While a BDP student, Cody conducted research on military culture and Army ranking processes. In Fall 2007, Cody began Law School at UT-Austin.
Heather Holloway
Journalism, Graduated Spring 2007
Heather’s interest in the role of the news media in promoting social justice led her to pursue an Ethics and Leadership BDP. As an intern for the non-profit organization Soulforce, Heather investigated the group’s media coverage. She also researched ethical issues in print design at Brilliant Magazine. After graduation, Heather traveled to Israel and Palestine for a mission trip, then moved to Africa to serve in the Peace Corps.
Elizabeth Linthicum
English, Graduated Fall 2006
The BDP in Ethics and Leadership allowed Elizabeth to explore the relationships among business, ethics, law, and cultural production. She helped digitize two Art History courses and compile a catalogue on the politics of art in Renaissance Italy. She also interned with the Corporate Social Responsibility Group and with Phenix Literary Publicists. After graduation, Elizabeth accepted a position as Development Consultant for the Kappa Delta Sorority. She is applying to graduate school in Public Affairs for Fall 2008.
James Norris
Philosophy, Graduated Fall 2006
James added a BDP in Ethics and Leadership to his Philosophy major in order to explore the theories and practices that characterize the non-profit sector. For his connecting experiences, James interned at the RGK Center for Philanthropy and Community Service and at the American Red Cross. After he graduated, James began working as Utility Player for Story Stores, LLC, an Austin start-up company focused on the museum industry. James is currently taking time to read and travel as he focuses on personal development. James is particularly interested in the field of social entrepreneurship.
Shea Wynn
Government, Graduated Summer 2006
The Ethics and Leadership BDP helped Shea focus her studies as an undergraduate on the ethical issues and problems that must be addressed in political leadership. Through the BDP, Shea interned with the Texas Democratic Party and participated in the Archer Fellowship program where she spent the semester interning with "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" at ABC News in Washington, D.C. After she graduated, Shea began attending New York University Law School, where she hopes to pursue public interest law and eventually return to D.C.
Allyshah Allahdina
Mathematics, Graduated Spring 2006
The Ethics and Leadership BDP program enabled AllyShah to take humanities courses in bioethics to supplement his pre-medical studies at the university. As an undergraduate, AllyShah participated in research on end-of-life care and medical futility with Dr. Joy Penticuff from the School of Nursing. The BDP research allowed for AllyShah to experience first-hand the issues modern medicine is facing today. After graduation, AllyShah began pursuing a Masters in Public Health in International Health, a step on the way to matriculating to medical school at T.C.O.M.
Dawn Delaney
Business Management, Graduated Spring 2006
The BDP allowed Dawn to take classes that focus on empowering people and appreciating and respecting different cultures. During her time at UT Dawn studied abroad in Belgium and had the opportunity to learn about international human resource management and how to effectively interact and work with people from all over the world. After she graduated, Dawn spent a summer in New Orleans helping Katrina victims, after which she left for Swaziland, Africa, to spend nine months working with the AIDS population there. Eventually Dawn foresees herself using her business skills to help run an international non-profit organization.
Daniel Macdonald
Government, Graduated Spring 2006
Through the Ethics and Leadership BDP, Daniel explored the relationships between political and legal philosophy and practice. His BDP coursework, focused in the government and philosophy departments, allowed him to understand the foundations upon which our government and legal system are based, and his internships with the Texas and United States House of Representatives allowed him to relate his coursework to a real-world environment. After graduation, Daniel continued his pursuit of politics and law at the George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C.
Lauren Sneed
Government, Graduated Spring 2006
Through the BDP, Lauren completed internships in Washington, D.C., and in Spain, where she worked for a Catalan political foundation, ultimately producing a comparative study of campaign finance laws in the United States and the European Union. After she graduated from UT, she started a program at South Texas College of Law in Houston to study conflict resolution and mediation.
Albert Hicks
Finance, Graduated Spring 2005
Albert used the Ethics and Leadership BDP to explore his interests in international politics and social justice. The BDP gave him the opportunity to participate in research with Dr. Robert Duvic in Finance to explore the effectiveness of the World Bank and IMF in alleviating poverty worldwide, and to intern in Washington D.C. as part of the UT in D.C. program, where he worked at the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC). After graduation, Albert worked at Lehman Brothers as an analyst, and he now works at Highland Capital Management as a portfolio analyst.
Mohan Rajagopalan
Government, Graduated Spring 2005
While in the BDP, Mohan interned at the Texas House of Representatives, for State Representative Michael U. Villarreal, performing research and policy analysis concerning the state affairs committee and environmental legislation. He also participated in the UT in D.C. program and interned for the public opinion and market research firm of Peter D. Hart Research Associates. Since he graduated from UT, Mohan has been working with Accenture Consulting in Austin, working within the government operating group helping to design and build technology systems to help people register to vote and apply for welfare benefits. An active member of the corporate citizenship community, Mohan acts as the consultant advisor to the Austin Analyst Council and plans monthly leadership forums for colleagues to meet local senior executives. He is also the scholarship chairman for the Bill Archer Fellowship for the UT in DC program.
Charlotte Simpson
Sociology, Graduated Fall 2004
While she was a BDP student, Charlotte assisted Clifford Antone in creating a course called, "Blues, Race, and Social Change" which he co-taught with Dr. Lester Kurtz, and she participated in research and a practicum on conflict mediation with Dr. Madeline Maxwell. After she graduated from UT, Charlotte went on to the European Peace University to study International Peace Studies. She was only there for one month, when her father was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and she moved back home to Houston to be with her family. In Houston, Charlotte enrolled in an MBA program at Jones International University to focus on Conflict Resolution and Negotiation, and she is also working as the Director of a social day program for blind and disabled adults at the Lighthouse of Houston for the Blind. Charlotte has also had the opportunity to travel to South Africa and Namibia since she left UT. In her words, "My father and I were planning a trip to Botswana before he was diagnosed with cancer. I knew I had to fulfill my dreams while he was still alive so that he could be a part of them by at least sharing the photos afterward. I traveled to Namibia and South Africa September 2006, and I was able to represent the University of Texas at the Satyagraha Conference in Durban celebrating the 100th year anniversary of Gandhi's movement. I met Ela Gandhi and felt honoured to be in the presence of such amazing people from around the world."
Richard A. Howell
Government, Graduated Summer 2004
As a BDP student, Richard worked as an intern in the policy department for Speaker Tom Craddick, Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, and he went to Washington, D.C., through the UT in D.C. program. He worked for the White House as an intern to the Deputy to the Senior Advisor. Following graduation, Richard spent the summer in Edinburgh, Scotland, studying business law and the European Union though the McCombs School of Business CIBER program. Afterwards, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked for NASA. Currently, Richard is a third-year student at Baylor Law School. He believes that his experience in the BDPs contributed to his interest in public service.
