Connecting Experiences Spotlights

Shayna Hill

Major: Radio-Television-Film
Type of Experience: Research
Mentor: Jennifer Fuller, Radio-Television-Film

For her second Connecting Experience, Shayna is working as a research assistant to Professor Jennifer Fuller on projects involving media and racial representations from the 1960’s to the 1990’s. In one project, Shayna will use television westerns from the 1960’s to examine the civil rights movement’s influence on storylines about race and on portrayals of the Civil War. She will also investigate racial politics and civil rights in the 1990’s. In both projects, Shayna will analyze the ethical representation of race, ethnicity, and identity in American media.

Sharon Kim

Major: Nutrition
Type of Experience: Internship
Mentor: William Winslade, Philosophy

To build upon her coursework in Ethics & Health Care, Sharon interned with the Ethics Committee at Brackenridge Hospital in the fall of 2008. She attended training workshops and presentations in addition to working directly with the director of Patient Rights and Biomedical Ethics. Sharon was able to learn about individual patient cases, Brackenridge Hospital policy, and state and federal law throughout her internship.

Connecting Experiences Advising

Marion Rocco, the Connecting Experiences advisor for the Ethics and Leadership BDP, can help you find research and internship experiences that connect to your major and your career plans. Call 232-7564 to make an appointment with Marion. Remember to plan ahead—if you want to be in a connecting experience next semester, you should be planning for it now!

All students participating in a Connecting Experience will be required to attend two meetings during the semester, where you will have the opportunity to talk with advisors and other students about how your experience is going, and where you’ll learn about how to talk about and build on your experience in the future. Please see the Connecting Experiences Resources page under Current Students for details.

Past Ethics and Leadership Connecting Experiences

Important: There is no “list” of possible Connecting Experiences to choose from—because Connecting Experiences are designed to fit your own personal interests and goals, the “list” is as long as your imagination and creativity allow. With that in mind, here are some of the internship and research experiences Ethics and Leadership students have had in the past. They might help you get started brainstorming what you might want to do for your Connecting Experiences.
