"I'm so glad I got the chance to experience the creation of a documentary fully on my own as a part of my Bridging Disciplines Program."

Please describe your project and how you came up with the idea.
I knew I wanted to incorporate my passion for creating documentary films into my BDP focus on social entrepreneurship and non-profits by making a short documentary about a local non-profit organization. As I began to research non-profits, my faculty mentor connected me with Austin Classical Guitar’s Executive Director, Matt Hinsley. Matt and I talked and it became clear that a short documentary about their education program would be a perfect fit for my Connecting Experience.

What was the most rewarding aspect of your Connecting Experience?
The most rewarding aspect of my Connecting Experience was the people I worked with. Austin Classical Guitar Society is an incredibly friendly and welcoming organization. From the executive director, all the way down to the students, everyone involved is completely in love with what they do. It was inspiring to get to see such excitement, skill, and passion at work, doing good in the world.

In what ways has this Connecting Experience shaped your plans for the future?
This Connecting Experience has definitely solidified my love and passion for the place where film and non-profits intersect. I love the passion, hope, and intensity that come with those working in non-profits. Every non-profit has a human side to the organization and that’s the thing that film can truly bring out. I’m so glad I got the chance to experience the creation of a documentary fully on my own as a part of my Bridging Disciplines Program. Because of this, I plan to pursue film production for non-profit organizations as a career post-graduation.
