Students looking for information about core curriculum requirements should visit the UGS Core Curriculum page.
At The University of Texas at Austin, the degree plan of every undergraduate includes a 42-hour core curriculum. These core requirements are designed to create a common intellectual experience that complements each student’s major. The core consists of a first-year Signature Course along with a broad foundation of coursework in the following core areas: English composition, literature, government, history, social sciences, mathematics, natural sciences and technology, and visual and performing arts.
Core courses are selected based on their ability to develop student competencies defined by UT Austin and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for each core area. For more information on the process of core course selection, please visit Proposing Core Courses.
