This course is based on the assumption that membership in a population at risk (people of color, women, gay and lesbian persons) significantly influences an individual’s life experiences, world view, and increase risk factors for exposure to discrimination, economic deprivation, and oppression. The course will equip students with the knowledge of history and heritage of populations at risk: women and ethnic minority populations of African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans, and Native Americans.

The required text is Readings for Diversity and Social Justice: An Anthology on Racism, Sexism, Anti-Semitism, Heterosexism, Classism, and Ableism by M. Adams, W. Blumenfeld, R. Cateneda, H. Hackerman, and X. Zuniga (2000).
Describe typical assignments related to Cultural Diversity in the United States.
There is a reflections on the readings assignment. There is a position paper assignment where students are to choose an issue, take a position, and write a paper. There is a “culture chest” assignment where students need to select personal items that represent their social identities (race, gender, sexual orientation, ability, religion, social class, nationality, age, and size) and explain how these items have influenced their worldview and behavior. There is a critical analysis and strategic action paper.

The course grade is based on 100 points, of which the reflections on the readings entries are assigned 10 points, the position paper is assigned 10 points, the culture chest is assigned 10 points, and the critical analysis and strategic action paper is assigned 35 points, totaling 65 out of 100 points, which meets the 1/3 course grade requirement for the Cultural Diversity flag.
