The task of choosing a major is often an anxiety-filled experience. With the resources available to you in the School of Undergraduate Studies, at UT and in the surrounding Austin community, it can be a positive one. More specifically, the Center for Strategic Advising has academic advisors available who are trained to assist students with exploring possible majors and finding out how to connect those majors to possible careers.
If you are a prospective or current student and are undecided about a major, it is recommended that you contact the Center and schedule an appointment with one of our academic advisors. You can also find information by checking out the Student Guide to Exploring, which includes an explanation of how to choose a major, simple activities to enable you to assess who you are and what you might want to pursue, and resources that can help you in your search. It is important that you not try to do this alone, as there are academic advisors here to assist you.
For parents, we have also provided a short Parent Guide, which provides some tips about how to support your student while they weigh the varied academic opportunities that are available at the university.
If you are an academic advisor and you are looking for some information how to best assist your undecided or undeclared student, we have also put together an overview of the role advisors play in Advising Undeclared Students.
Remember, you can always contact the Center for Strategic Advising for more information and guidance whether you are a student, parent, or advisor.
