Welcome to UGS
The School of Undergraduate Studies is home to students who are exploring majors at UT Austin. The advisors and career counselors in the Center for Strategic Advising & Career Counseling are excited to meet you and introduce you to resources that will help you identify majors and careers that align with your goals.
As a new student, you should
- Register for an orientation session through the New Student Services web site
- Create an official UT Austin email address and update your email address in the university directory. Email is the official form of communication for UT Austin and the School of Undergraduate Studies.
- Send an official college transcript to the UT Office of Admissions if any college or dual credit has been completed or you plan to request any transfer credit
- Obtain a student ID card and upgrade your UT EID
- Start exploring majors and review the application processes for other colleges on campus
- Learn about ways to supplement your degree, including health professions course requirements such as pre-medical and pre-dental, Bridging Disciplines Programs, or the Business Foundations Certificate
- Check your Registration Information Sheet for registration access times and advising bars

Our Four-semester Rule
As a UGS student, you have four long semesters before you must declare a major. This rule applies to new freshmen as well as transfer students, although transfer students are encouraged to decide on a major within their first year at UT Austin. If you transferred into UGS from another college or school at the university after your first year, you have two long, full-time semesters in UGS.
