Lora Chowdhury

Major:
Economics with Business Foundations
Graduation Year:
Spring 2014
"[UGS] has given me direction and the utmost satisfaction with my major choice. I love every bit of what I do and I am not sure I would have found it as fast (or at all) without UGS."

Starting in UGS
I applied to Undergraduate Studies and was ecstatic when I was accepted. I chose my major after many many chats and visits with my amazing academic advisor, David Spight. We discussed my strengths, weaknesses, likes, dislikes, and everything in between.

I initially thought I wanted to transfer into business, but by the time I made that decision, I did not have any of the prerequisites and it would have put me almost two years behind! With everyone’s help and support in UGS, I am graduating college in just three years and I have done everything I could have imagined. Thank you, UGS!

Studying Economics
Economics is truly the best of both worlds—I get to “nerd out” with all the rigorous math, but I also get to consider real-world applications and many theoretical models at the same time.

My most rewarding class was Comparative Economic Systems. It was definitely not my favorite class. In fact, I considered dropping it every day up until I turned in my final exam. It was my first upper-division writing flag, and I learned so many important skills like research, editing, drafting, writing, etc. I know those skills will guide me through the rest of my life.

Favorite Study Spot
In the skyway between the SAC and the CLA

Campus Involvement
I was involved with the student chapter of Distressed Children and Infants International, the Learn to Be Bengali Students Association, the Alpha Lambda Delta Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, and the Omicron Delta Epsilon International Economics Honor Society.

Internships
In the summer of 2012, I interned with the law offices of Dell, Brown, and Ross, and in the fall of 2012 I worked in the Texas House of Representatives.

Advice for UGS Students
Don’t worry too much. Take the time you’re in UGS to explore who you are and find out what you are really passionate about. Seek out help from the amazing faculty and staff and, believe me, it will shape your future (even if you don’t think it at the time).
