First-year Interest Groups

A First-year Interest Group (FIG) is a cohort of up to 25 first-year students who develop community by taking two to four classes together. Students get to know their classmates by attending a weekly seminar facilitated by a peer mentor and staff member. Students discuss issues they encounter such as:

  • study and time management strategies
  • social opportunities and issues
  • campus life and involvement opportunities

Students satisfy degree requirements while forging a link between academic and social experiences. More reasons to join a FIG

  • 97% of FIG students stated that participation in FIG “helped me feel more comfortable at UT”
  • 97% stated that FIG participation made me “feel part of the UT community”
  • 98% said they would recommend a FIG to new students

Visit the orientation brochure page to view the FIG offerings for fall 2013.

What is a FIG anyway?
