The First-Year Experience Office serves every single first-year student at the University of Texas. From Signature Courses to First-year Interest Groups (FIGs), we are here to help make The University of Texas at Austin your new home and a place to flourish.
Join a First-year Interest Group and take two to three courses with a small cohort of first-year students with similar interests. An undergraduate mentor will connect you with helpful resources and support you and your FIG as you transition to college life. Even on the first day of school, you will have friends sitting next to you in class.
Connect with top-level university faculty during your first year on campus in your Signature Course (UGS 302 and UGS 303). Offered on a variety of topics, these rigorous, interdisciplinary courses help students transition to college-level academics and introduce valuable university resources. Classes are made up of students from across the university and taught by faculty from all colleges and schools. Cross disciplinary boundaries, explore important societal issues, and learn about the vast resources that make UT a world class center of learning and creativity.
Designed to create a campus-wide conversation, the University Lecture Series gives first-year students an opportunity to interact with leading members of our faculty—scholars, scientists, and civic leaders who are nationally and internationally renowned. All students, faculty, alumni, staff and community guests are invited, but the events are aimed at first-year students. The University Lecture Series is generously brought to UT by the Audre and Bernard Rapoport Excellence Fund for Undergraduate Studies.
