What is the Longhorn Scholars Program?

Longhorn Scholars is a four-year honors program for top 10% students from selected Texas high schools whose graduates have historically been underrepresented at The University of Texas at Austin. All Longhorn Scholars have been awarded scholarships to attend UT Austin.

Who can participate?

Participation in the Longhorn Scholars Program is by invitation. To be eligible, you must graduate from a participating Texas high school and be the recipient of a qualifying scholarship (including the Longhorn Opportunity Scholarship, the Presidential Achievement Scholarship, or the Terry Scholarship).

How do I apply?

Students from participating Texas high schools should complete the Texas Common Application for Scholarships for Entering Freshman Students. For more information about the Longhorn Opportunity Scholarship Application, visit the following website: http://www.texasscholarships.org/types/osfs/los.html.

What are the benefits of being a Longhorn Scholar?

Longhorn Scholars enjoy numerous benefits throughout their four years at UT:

  • Advising support

In addition to your academic advisor, you will have the support of an advisor in the Longhorn Scholars Program office. From freshman year to graduation, your Longhorn Scholars advisor will work with you to choose courses, plan your degree, get study abroad and scholarship information, and help you take advantage of all that UT has to offer.

  • Peer mentoring

The Longhorn Scholars Mentor Program offers the opportunity to learn from experienced students—and to share your wisdom with future generations of Longhorn Scholars.

  • Program events

Special events throughout the year encourage Longhorn Scholars to share their college experiences both inside and outside the classroom. Special events also allow you to get to know professors, advisors, and staff, all of whom can share their educational and professional experience.

  • A diverse curriculum of small and large classes taught by outstanding professors

As a Longhorn Scholar, you will be able to choose classes from the Longhorn Scholars Curriculum, which is made up of smaller classes and classes taught by outstanding professors, including the Academy of Distinguished Teachers.

  • Opportunities to make connections across disciplines that integrate classroom, research, and internship experiences

Your Longhorn Scholars advisor will introduce you to innovative cross-disciplinary programs such as the Bridging Disciplines Programs, which can help you tailor your degree to reflect your passions and goals.

  • Participation in faculty research

Participating in faculty research enables you to develop your knowledge, explore potential careers, and build lasting relationships with faculty mentors.

  • Leadership Development
