Dr. Lawrence D. Abraham, a professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education, has been appointed Associate Dean of the School of Undergraduate Studies at the University of Texas at Austin.
“Larry Abraham is a highly regarded member of the faculty, and the university has often called on his talents as a skilled administrator and visionary leader,” said Dean of Undergraduate Studies Paul B. Woodruff. “I am delighted that he has agreed to accept this crucial position in the School of Undergraduate Studies.”
As Associate Dean, Abraham will assist the Dean in the general management of the School of Undergraduate Studies, providing leadership in areas as diverse as academic affairs, student affairs, advising, and assessment. He will work with the dean to continue the implementation and assessment of the university’s new core curriculum—including Signature Courses and Course Flags—in line with policies adopted by the Faculty Council, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
“I look forward to working with Dean Woodruff and the staff in the School of Undergraduate Studies to build on the strong foundation that has been laid since the publication of the report of the Task Force on Curricular Reform,” said Abraham.
Dr. Abraham earned his bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College and his doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia University. His research at the university has focused on the neural control and biomechanics of human movement. He is a member of the Institute for Neuroscience and the Graduate Studies Committee in Biomedical Engineering.
In the university’s College of Education, Dr. Abraham has served as Associate Dean for Teacher Education and Student Affairs and as Chairman of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. He is currently co-Director of the university’s widely acclaimed UTeach program, which is now being replicated nationally.
Since joining the faculty in 1975, Dr. Abraham has served on numerous university committees including the Faculty Council, Faculty Advisory Committee on Budgets, and Faculty Rules Committee. He currently chairs the Educational Policy Committee. Abraham was a member of the Task Force on Curricular Reform, which developed the plan for the university’s new core curriculum and recommended the creation of the School of Undergraduate Studies.
Abraham will begin his new responsibilities this summer, which will include replacing Cale McDowell, who has served as Deputy to the Dean since Woodruff’s appointment as inaugural Dean of Undergraduate Studies in September 2006. McDowell will leave the university to become an attorney in the Austin office of Jackson Walker L.L.P.
