As a first-year UGS student, Armando Vera was the inaugural recipient of the UGS Summer Exploration Experience Grant. Armando used his grant to partially fund his travel and program fees for the International Volunteer Headquarters – Teaching English Program in Cuzco, Peru. He spent a month teaching English to elementary school children at the Tancarpata Primary.
At the end of his time in Peru, Armando was delighted to see how much English his students had learned. He was able to experience first-hand that “what starts here, really does change the world,” and now plans to pursue international relations while at The University of Texas at Austin. He is currently a sophomore in the College of Liberal Arts.
“My month in Peru exposed me to many physical and social elements,” says Armando. “Everything I experienced there was unlike anything I had expected. What’s more, I was able to explore not only myself, but also experience what life outside of my comfort zone is truly like. As a result of my time in Peru, I have returned with new mental strength, wider vision, and the hope of achieving higher goals.”
The UGS Exploration Experience Grants fund academic and career exploration among students enrolled in the School of Undergraduate Studies. The deadline for 2011 applications is March 30.
