Signature Courses are an important part of becoming a successful college student. Students learn to be effective communicators, inquisitive researchers, and critical thinkers. Through Signature Courses, first-year students are able to choose from a myriad of subjects offered by faculty hailing from every college and school at the University. For students who are undecided about their major, these courses offer a perfect means of exploring new academic avenues. For those who are sure of their major, this course offers students a way of taking a course outside of major requirements while still fulfilling a core requirement, depending on whether their home college or school has adopted the new core curriculum.
Though all students planning to graduate under the 2010-2012 Undergraduate Catalog or later will be required to complete a First-Year Signature Course, students planning to graduate under the 2008-2010 Undergraduate Catalog are only required to complete the course if they are earning a degree from one of the following colleges:
School of Architecture
Red McCombs School of Business
College of Communication
College of Education
Jackson School of Geosciences
College of Liberal Arts
School of Nursing
Students who wish to internally transfer to these schools should speak to their advisor about enrolling in a Signature Course.
There are over one hundred Signature Course offerings in the Fall and Spring semesters for 2008-2009. Students are encouraged to take courses in the Fall, as there are fewer Spring offerings. There is a process by which students who cannot take a Fall course for various reasons or are interested in a specific Spring course, may pre-register with the Signature Course office. Either fill the Spring Registration Form and email it to Sally Bergom or Cindy Wilson, or stop by our office in FAC 1. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call (512) 471-4421, email, or visit our office.
