Loretta first came to the Sanger Learning Center seeking help in her freshman calculus class. Today, she tutors students in chemistry and computer science courses.

What has been the most rewarding part about working at the Sanger Center?
Being a tutor helps me communicate better to different people who learn in different ways, and that makes me more attractive to employers than someone who’s brilliant but doesn’t know how to break down ideas and explain them clearly.

Some students come into the Sanger Center panicky, on the verge of tears. They feel sad and stupid, and the Sanger Center is a very positive, happy place. I’ve seen my tutees grow in their education and in their confidence. It’s really rewarding.

What has been the most surprising or unexpected aspect of your job?
The majority of students who come to the Sanger Center want actual help, and they are very patient when it comes to getting that help. When I first took this job, I thought that I would have frantic students who would be very stubborn in learning material a different way, or would only want help getting the right answers on their homework without understanding why. This rarely happens. It is great to see that students are so eager to learn and listen to what their tutors have to say.

What advice would you give to incoming students about being academically successful at UT?
Take advantage of all the resources given to you: the Sanger Learning Center, teachers, TAs, and your peers. You are never alone and there always people willing to help even if you think it isn’t true. You just have to reach out to them.
