Supplemental Instruction is a program that adds weekly discussion sections to courses that do not have them or enhances the quality of preexisting discussion sections. SI not only helps students with course material, but helps them develop the skills they need to become successful and self-sufficient students.
Students enrolled in SI-supported courses who attend the weekly, voluntary SI sessions typically score a half to a full letter grade higher than those who do not. SI sessions help you master your course and learn collaboratively with your peers in a relaxed and engaging setting. Graduate-level SI leaders receive extensive training in order to give you targeted, guided practice on the most important content and vital skills for your course.
Weekly discussion sections, known as SI sessions, are led by SI leaders who schedule at least two SI sessions each week. Students can attend either session. SI leaders plan activities that give students practice with course content. Students should expect to actively participate in the activities and work together with their peers and SI leaders to discover answers.
All students enrolled in an SI-supported course are invited to attend SI sessions; the program is voluntary and students can participate at any point in the semester. Session dates, times, and locations are announced in class.
