Design & Communications Guide

Use the links in the left-hand menu to access all of the topics. When deciding whether to hire a graphic designer, weigh how much time your employee will spend designing versus how much time a designer might spend, and how much each will cost you.

Using a Designer

You are not required to use the Design Center, but per university policy, you must go through them if you hire a graphic designer. If you choose to use a designer, please review our process before starting.

Not Using a Designer

If you do not hire a graphic designer, you are responsible for managing the entire design and print process. Please review the UGS design standards before you begin. Your print process responsibilities include getting a printing quote or soliciting bids, knowing and following purchasing guidelines, and communicating with the printer (including attending press check) if necessary. You must show a sample of your piece to Communications Coordinator Lara Harlan before you use it, allowing enough time to make changes if asked to.

Photo Release Form

The university has a standard Talent Release Form. If you are taking photos or videos of students, you should ask them to sign this. The form documents a subject’s agreement to let you record him or her, and also approves the use, exhibition, or distribution of the photos or video. It will clarify the fact that they are giving you permission to use the images on future promotional materials or a website, for example.
