Mathematics

UT Austin offers both course-based and self-paced developmental math. The course-based developmental program (DEV 300M, Basic Math and Algebra Skills) is offered in a one-semester review or a two-semester sequence. The self-paced developmental math program (DEV 000M, Basic Math and Algebra Skills) usually takes two semesters to complete. A student must earn a passing grade in each required developmental math course to complete the TSI requirements.

Developmental Mathematics I: DEV 301M (fall semester)
The first of a two-course sequence combines arithmetic skills with beginning algebra. The arithmetic content includes operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, ratio and proportions and percent. The algebra content focuses on variables, straight-line graphs, setting up and solving word problems, and relating simple algebraic concepts to geometry.

Developmental Mathematics II: DEV 302M (spring semester)
The second of a two-course sequence includes solving linear equations, solving systems of equations, integers, exponents and scientific notation, factoring polynomials, rational expressions and equations, radical expressions, and more geometric problems.

Basic Math and Algebra Skills Review: DEV 303M
This review course is designed for students who want the structure of a classroom setting and who do not need extensive remediation. The course focuses on reviewing the types of problems found on the mathematics portion of the THEA test, as well as test-taking strategies and skills.

Basic Mathematics Skill Development: DEV 000M
DEV 000M is an independent study course taught at the UT Learning Center and is designed to provide students with the math skills necessary to succeed in future college-level mathematics courses. The program consists of five levels: fundamental math, algebra 1, algebra 2, geometry and problem solving. With the help of math consultants, students work in two of these areas during each nine-week course. Students are expected to complete weekly assignments and will be given a mastery test in each of their areas of study.

Restricted Courses

Due to the sequential nature of mathematics, students may not enroll in any college-level math course until they have completed their TSI math requirement.
