Students who do not pass the reading portion of the THEA, ASSET, COMPASS or ACCUPLACER are required to take UGS 309, Analytical Reading and Writing, or DEV 000R during their first semester at UT Austin. Students must earn a grade of ‘C’ or better in UGS 309, or a grade of ‘S’ in DEV 000R to complete the TSI reading requirement.
UGS 309: Analytical Reading and Writing
The purpose of this course is to improve strategic reading and writing skills. In addition to information and practice on academic reading, the course includes activities to promote critical thinking. Students engage in a variety of tasks such as discipline specific readings, reflective writing, and group assignments. This is a college-level course and students receive letter grades on a scale from ‘A’ to ‘F’. A student must earn at least a ‘C’ in UGS 309 to complete the TSI requirement.
DEV 000R: Basic Reading Skills
DEV 000R is an independent study course taught at the UT Learning Center. A reading consultant is assigned to work with each student throughout the nine-week course. The student will meet with the consultant once a week for instruction, and will work from a folder of individualized assignments during each week. Students have the opportunity to test out of DEV 000R at any time competency is achieved. A mastery post-test is given at the end of the nine weeks.
Students may not enroll in PSY 301, Introduction to Psychology; GOV 310L, American Government; HIS 315 K or L, United States History; or E 316K, Masterworks of Literature until they pass the reading section of one of the approved tests or earn a passing grade in one of the courses listed below.
