Writing

Students who do not pass the writing portion of the THEA, ASSET, COMPASS or ACCUPLACER will meet with a TSI advisor to determine which of the following courses is best for them.

DEV 000W: Basic Writing Skill Development
DEV 000W is a non-credit independent study course that is taken concurrently with RHE 306, Rhetoric and Writing. The course is taught by the UT Learning Center where a writing consultant is assigned to work with each student for the nine-week course. The student will meet with the consultant once a week for instruction, and will work from a folder of individualized assignments during each week. A grade of ‘S’ in Dev 000W and a ‘C’ or higher in Rhetoric 306 while enrolled in DEV 000W will indicate completion of the TSI writing requirement.

UGS 309: Analytical Reading and Writing
The purpose of this course is to improve strategic reading and writing skills needed for academic success. In addition to information and practice on academic reading and writing, the course includes activities to promote effective study skills and critical thinking. Students engage in a variety of tasks such as discipline specific readings, reflective writing, and group assignments. This is a college-level course and students receive letter grades on a scale from ‘A’ to ‘F’. A student must earn at least a ā€˜C’ in UGS 309 to complete the TSI requirement.

RHE 306Q: Rhetoric and Writing for Nonnative Speakers of English
International students should speak to a TSI advisor about taking RHE 306Q in place of a linked DEV 000 and RHE 306 if they meet the Division of Rhetoric and Composition’s prerequisites. RHE 306Q is an intensive freshman composition course designed for international students whose native language is not English. The course meets five times a week and includes English grammar along with rhetoric and writing. Students must earn at least a ‘C’ to complete the writing portion of the TSI requirement.
