Honors Colloquium Student Mentors

Applications are available for current enthusiastic UT students to serve as Student Mentors and help introduce talented high school students to the academic and social life of The University of Texas at Austin. Each summer as many as 600 high school students attend the Colloquium. They are outstanding rising seniors primarily from Texas high schools, but also representing select out-of-state schools. Those students who ultimately apply to the University will compete for UT Austin's distinguished scholarships and honors programs for incoming freshmen.

Colloquium events include lectures, small classes, and tours of laboratories, libraries and museums. Recreational, cultural and social opportunities are also part of the program. Current UT Austin students serve as Student Mentors to Colloquium participants. The commitment and enthusiasm of Student Mentors is key to the success of the program each year. Student Mentors and Colloquium participants live in Jester throughout the duration of the Colloquium.

Other programs work in conjunction with the Honors Colloquium to provide a sneak preview of specific fields of study within the University. One that will be offered this year is WE@UT which allows women interested in engineering an opportunity to experience engineering programming and requires recruiting program assistants to serve as mentors the day before Colloquium begins. Please see the additional sheet located after the application documents for more information.

WE@UT Program Assistants

For the eighth year, the Women in Engineering Program (WEP) will host WE@UT (Women in Engineering at UT), a two-day, pre-Colloquium residential program for women considering majors in science or engineering. The purpose of WE@UT is to motivate young women to pursue careers in engineering, to familiarize them with the broad opportunities that an engineering degree can offer, and to encourage them to study engineering at UT Austin.

In coordination with the Colloquium staff, we seek UT Austin students who may serve as mentors and as program assistants. Expectations of the position are similar to those of a Colloquium Student Mentor, and include the following:

  • Attend training on Tuesday, July 22, coordinated with Student Mentor training for the Colloquium.
  • Reside in Jester Residence Hall beginning July 23, to serve as resident assistants during the entire program.
  • Be available for duties as needed from 8:00 am on July 23 through 1:00 pm on July 24, then continue with regular Colloquium Student Mentor duties as outlined in the previous position description.
  • Develop and lead activities during the program, and serve as student resources to answer questions.

Program assistants for WE@UT will receive a $100.00 stipend per day in addition to their Colloquium Student Mentor stipend. Room and board will also be provided prior to the Colloquium.
