National Scholarship Opportunities

Carnegie Endowment Junior Fellows Program
Campus Deadline: Thursday, November 29, 2007

Purpose:

The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing cooperation between nations and promoting active international engagement by the United States. As one of the world’s leading think tanks specializing in international affairs, the Endowment conducts programs of research, discussion, publication and education. The Junior Fellows Program at the Carnegie Endowment is designed to provide a substantive work experience for students who have a serious career interest in the area of international affairs. Approximately 8-10 students will be hired to work at the Carnegie Endowment in Washington, DC on a full-time basis for a period of one year.

Eligibility:

  • Nomination by The University of Texas at Austin through The University Honors Center

  • Current University of Texas at Austin seniors or alumni who have granted within the past academic year and have not started graduate studies

  • Applicants should have completed a significant amount of course work in international affairs, political science, economics, history, or Russia, China or Middle East studies. The selection process for the Junior Fellows Program is very competitive.

All applications must be delivered to The University Honors Center, CRD 23, no later than Thursday, November 29, 2007 and must include:

  • Carnegie Endowment Junior Fellows Program Application form

  • One to two page resume

  • Essay on one of the seven topics, maximum of three typewritten double-spaced pages

  • One page (or less) essay on why you would like to become a junior fellow

  • Student transcript (unofficial transcript is acceptable)

  • Two recommendations, at least one of which should be from a professor of the student's major department.

A committee of faculty and staff will review applications and select up to two nominees for the national competition. The Carnegie Endowment does not accept applications directly from students. The University of Texas at Austin deadline is November 29, 2007.



The Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program
Campus Deadline: Thursday, November 29, 2007

Purpose:

The Institute of International Education (IIE), in partnership with educational organizations in selected countries, conducts an annual competition on college campuses to identify 150 of the most accomplished second-year students for the Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program. The program recognizes their outstanding achievements and abilities in a public ceremony and awards each Global Leader $3,000. Seventy-five of the Global Leaders will be selected on the basis of personal interviews to represent the group at the Global Leadership Institute in New York City in July 2008. The Global Leadership Institute will offer this select group of students from around the world an opportunity to collaboratively examine important issues such as the new media, ethical leadership, and leadership styles in the non-profit and academic as well as the public and private sectors.

Eligibility:

  • Nomination by The University of Texas at Austin through The University Honors Center

  • Current University of Texas at Austin sophomores with a minimum GPA of 3.4/4.0 or equivalent or from the top ten percent of their class

  • Pursuing their first undergraduate degree

  • Strong record of leadership and participation in public and community affairs

This application requires two applications – one for the campus competition due on November 29, 2007 and the other by campus finalists in January directly to the foundation.
