Honor societies are not the same thing as honors programs. While an honors program is an academic curriculum that dictates many of the courses you must take to earn a degree; an honor society is a student organization that often requires members to demonstrate high academic achievement. Often honor societies have a focus on a particular academic discipline (example: Beta Beta Beta, Biological Honor Society) or a particular college community (example: Mortar Board, National Honor Society for Seniors). There are more than 40 such organizations at UT Austin, representing diverse interests from across our Longhorn community. A project is now underway to bring descriptions and weblinks for all these organizations to this webpage.
Currently the University Honors Center provides support to the campus activities of Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma, national honor societies for first year students. The center also provides administrative services to the Alpha of Texas chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious college honor society. If you have any questions about honor societies, please contact us at the University Honors Center uhc@uts.cc.utexas.edu or 512-471-6524 .
