EXPLORE MAJORS

The University of Texas at Austin offers a variety of undergraduate degrees from 11 different colleges and schools.

What is a major? Each degree program requires a student to complete at least 120 semester hours of coursework. Students in all majors must complete the core curriculum, which makes up about a third of most degrees. A combination of major-specific courses and college-specific requirements compose the rest.

What is a certificate? Typically between 18-24 credits (more than a minor and less than a major), certificates are optional complements to majors. Most certificates are officially recognized on transcripts.

What is a minor? The requirements for a minor are determined by the school or college in which a student majors, but typically require between 12-15 hours in one subject. It is often possible to minor in a discipline outside the college in which a student chooses to major. Most minors are not officially recognized on transcripts at UT Austin.
