Current UT students interested in transferring to the Moody College of Communication may submit an
internal transfer application, which is open every February (for summer/fall admission) and September (for
spring admission). Visit the internal transfer website for the application and the dates of our internal
transfer information sessions. Students must have attended an information session within the past year
before they will be allowed to apply. Information session attendance is also required before a student may
meet with the Internal Transfer Advisor.
To apply, students who are not already enrolled in the Moody College must submit an online application,
which includes a statement of purpose and a resume. Students are notified of the committee's decision in
late May/early June (for summer/fall admission) or early January (for spring admission).
Students must have an overall UT GPA of at least 2.25 and a Communication GPA of at least 2.0 in order
to be considered for an internal transfer into the college. Students who want to add a second major (or
change their current second major) must have 30 hours in-residence and minimum UT and
Communication GPAs of 2.75. Priority is given to applicants who have already successfully
completed some CMS coursework.
Students who are not already enrolled in the Moody College of Communication may only apply to the
Moody College twice, and these attempts must be completed within their first four long-semesters at UT.
However, no student may apply to the Moody College during his/her first semester enrolled at UT.

Students should understand that although CMS courses are not in a specific sequence, students are only allowed to take nine CMS hours each semester. Students must plan to be a CMS major for no less than two and a half semesters in order to complete the requirements of the degree.
Communication Studies requires that a student choose a specific track to fulfill their requirements. Each track provides a student with a coherent grouping of courses, supported by a variety of courses he or she selects to complete degree requirements. Any track chosen from these offerings prepares a student for careers in corporate work, law, politics, teaching, counseling, or any job involving interaction with people.
Students can choose from Corporate Communication, Human Relations, or Political Communication.
- Corporate Communication is a specialization in Organizational Communication that focuses on communication between and among individuals and groups in organizations, including corporate, non-profit, and governmental organizations. Organizational Communication is the study of human interaction within complex organizations, including leadership and organizational behavior. Research projects among the faculty have focused on the process of understanding the effects of power, time, and sequence on messages, and how the understanding of others and communication with them occur over information and communication technologies.
- Human Relations is a specialization in Interpersonal Communication and focuses on interaction in a variety of human relationships and cultures. This includes both verbal and nonverbal communication, face-to-face communication, and intercultural communication.
- Political Communication is a specialization in Rhetorical Theory and focuses on communication in public settings, including political communication, persuasion, and argumentation theory.
Communication Studies majors are typically strong leaders, inquisitive, self-motivated, outspoken, and posses strong interpersonal skills.
