The Cultural Studies Bridging Disciplines Program (BDP) Certificate offers ways to ask questions relevant to our everyday encounters with differences and similarities, power and oppression, values and desires, pain and pleasure. Cultural Studies analyzes images, artifacts, narratives, and identities (including genders, sexualities, races, abilities, nationalities, and other social received markers), and their construction of social life. Its interdisciplinary approach offers methodologies with which to study culture defined in the broadest possible sense, from high art (museums, symphonies, theatre), to sports and leisure activities, to the practices of everyday life-all understood within a variety of social, historical, and national contexts.

Applications for the Bridging Disciplines Programs are accepted twice a year, during the fall and spring semesters. Learn additional information and how to apply to the BDPs. Interested students can attend an information session, which are offered throughout the semester.

Any degree-seeking undergraduate at UT-Austin is eligible to apply to the BDPs. Students must plan to be enrolled at UT-Austin as a degree-seeking undergraduate for at least two semesters after the semester in which they apply to the BDP. Students may choose to focus their Cultural Studies certificate through one of three strands:

  • Popular Cultures

Personality

Students in the Cultural Studies BDP form a community with shared interests in analyzing the construction of cultural production, identities, and histories. Cultural Studies students have come from a wide range of majors at UT, including American Studies, Anthropology, Architecture, Business, Communication Studies, Engineering, Education, Fine Arts, Journalism, Public Relations, Radio-Television-Film, Religious Studies, Sociology, Social Work, and many others.

Skills

After completing 19 credit hours consisting of coursework, research, and internship experiences, students earn a certificate that will be recognized on students' transcripts, demonstrating a secondary area of specialization that complements the major. By pursuing an interdisciplinary certificate, students in the BDPs learn to become more flexible, versatile thinkers, better prepared for a professional world that values innovation and collaboration.
