The Texas Business Foundations Certificate Program is designed to give undergraduate students of any discipline a fundamental background in business. The program allows students to supplement their current course of study and equip themselves with the business knowledge to turn passions into successful careers. Students who complete all required BFP coursework will have the certificate appear on their official transcripts after graduation.

All non-business students who are in good academic standing at the university and have a 2.0 overall UT grade point average may enroll in Texas BFP courses. There is no formal application process required to begin. Students may simply register and take classes on their own when ready. However, course prerequisites are strictly enforced, and it is up to the student to account for them.

Required Courses

All BFP students must complete four lower division courses. These lower division courses are applicable to both the General and Global tracks and mandatory to receive a certificate of completion. These courses may be taken in residence, transferred from other colleges and universities, or satisfied with advancement placement credit.

The remaining classes are all upper-division courses and specific to the student's chosen track. However, ALL upper-division Texas BFP courses must be taken either in residence, through University Extension, or through an approved study abroad program. These course may NOT be transferred from other colleges and universities or satisfied with advancement placement credit.

View the BFP Coursework page for a detailed list.

Specializations

The Texas Business Foundations Program offers two distinct tracks toward certification so that students are able to tailor their individual studies for their desired overall university experience. The General Track provides the basic business understanding suitable for most Texas BFP participants. The Global Track expands upon the core courses by including elements of international business for those interested in business worldwide. The Global Track also contains a study abroad and foreign language requirement; however, these do not have to be related. For example, a student who studies Spanish but studies abroad in Germany will satisfy the Global Track requirements.

Personality

Who should participate in the Business Foundations Program?

Students in any UT major outside of the business school can benefit from adding a foundation in business to their other academic pursuits. BFP students come from a variety of majors on campus, and have different interests and career goals. The BFP experience will significantly increase your marketability and expand your job opportunities, no matter which field you choose to enter. For example, an Art History major who completes the Business Foundations Certificate has the management and accounting skills to be an effective gallery manager. A history major with a Business Foundations Certificate will be an valued project manager thanks to his technical, quantitative, and communication skills.

Skills

What will the Business Foundations Program do for you?

This certificate is an overlay to a major and provides students with fundamental quantitative, communication, and management skills relevant to numerous careers. In the job market, it will set graduates apart from other candidates that do not have business course credit. It demonstrates to potential employers that, in addition to knowledge of his or her major, a student has a foundation of business knowledge that he or she can bring to the job. The courses can be viewed as the equivalent of a minor (actually more) and will meet the prerequisite requirements for many M.B.A. programs.
