Undergrad Degree: Economics
Favorite Class in College: Industrial Organization (Economics)
Graduate Degree: Master's of Business Administration (MBA)
College To Career: After graduating, I found a job with Nathan Associates, an economic consulting firm doing antitrust analysis. The classes I took in antitrust economics and industrial organization were very useful to help me do this job. I also learned a substantial amount of data analysis skills. After 3 years, I switched to a financial role at Capital One Financial, even though I had no background in finance. The skills I learned at Nathan Associates weren't directly applicable but the soft skills I developed (dealing with projects and clients, time management, analytical thinking) were critical. After 3 years at Capital One, I returned to school to develop my management and strategic thinking skills.
Career Influences: Really enjoyed my coursework in Economics, which directed me into the field. Switching to work at Capital One was prompted by an unexplored interest in finance. My choice of summer internship was influenced by a desire for a strategic position with a large firm.
Cons: Not as much of a learning/academic environment; can't wear flip flops every day; dealing with corporate lingo and red tape.
