Neighborhood Longhorns Program"Linking Community With Education"
The Neighborhood Longhorns Program (NLP), established in 1991, is an educational incentive program operated in partnership with the Austin Independent School District in 18 Title 1 elementary and middle schools. Program objectives are to • improve overall grade performance;• improve reading, math, and overall grade performance; • increase student retention rates; and • provide scholarships for students to seek a college education. The program serves economically disadvantaged youth in grades 3 through 8 who are at higher risks of experiencing academic difficulties, including low grade performance, low performance on tests, low school attendance and higher rates of dropping out of school. Services are tailored to each school based on the school’s TAAS scores and overall district report card rating. An academic plan is developed for each student by the teacher and the program coordinator based on diagnostic testing, the student’s report card, and their individual TAAS scores. Throughout the school year, Neighborhood Longhorns participants are recognized for their academic achievement after each grading period. Awards sessions are conducted at each participating school with University of Texas athletes and coaches serving as inspirational speakers, as well as, presenting students with prizes for improved reading skills, improved overall academic performance and maintaining perfect attendance.
Students who meet or surpass all the requirements for the entire school year are awarded a $100 scholarship for college which is placed in a savings account until the student graduates from high school. Students who attend the University of Texas receive additional monies to match the amount of scholarship money earned through participation in the Neighborhood Longhorns Program. The Neighborhood Longhorns Program also provides cultural and athletic activities for their students. These events allow students an opportunity to spend time with university and community volunteers in an informal setting and to gain a broader connection with their community. Students can also earn the opportunity to attend the many athletic camps that are offered during the summer at the University of Texas at Austin giving students further exposure to the college experience and to a diverse group of students who attend the camps. For more information or to volunteer, call 232-4650, log on to their website or visit their office at 1701 East 7th Street. |
