Unleashing the inner author
How do you unleash the inner author or poet in a child? That’s the challenge every writing teacher faces.
Fortunately, The University of Texas at Austin’s Heart of Texas Writing Project can provide the tools teachers need to help their students find their voices. The writing institute collaborates with Austin-area schools, holds summer workshops to develop new ways to teach the writing process and aims to build a foundation of knowledge and resources for teachers around the world, says Randy Bomer, the project’s director.
Of course, summer workshops wouldn’t be complete without the next generation of writers. Austin-area students attend writing camps and discover how to share their stories.
“If we can make a space where what they say is going to be valued and their voices are actually cherished and people are waiting to hear from them,” Bomer says, “then the more I think I’ve done my job.”
