Awards

All students who submit an essay in the competition receive a certificate of recognition.

Three students from each of ten designated regions throughout Texas are chosen as regional finalists and qualify for the state competition in the Spring of 2009 at The University of Texas at Austin.

Regional finalists attend an archival ceremony and awards dinner in the Spring of 2009, hosted by the President of The University of Texas at Austin, Mr. William Powers, Jr., where they receive medallions in the likeness of the late Honorable Barbara Jordan.

Essays of regional finalists are archived in The University of Texas at Austin’s Center for American History and become part of the Center’s important Texana collection.

Scholarship awards are presented to the top three essay winners in the following amounts:

1st place (Gold) $2,500

2nd place (Silver) $1,500

3rd place (Bronze) $1,000

Scholarship awards may be used at any college or university that the student selects.
