African Studies

Through courses, lectures, conferences, symposia, and workshops, nationally and internationally recognized scholars and artists share their work in African Studies at the University of Texas.  Several units on campus contribute toward maintaining the strength of African Studies.  The John L. Warfield Center for African and African American Studies sponsors the Seminar in African Feminisms, the Workshop in African Studies, and Yoruba Day, while individual faculty members spearhead several African Studies initiatives.  Among the faculty sponsored annual activities are the Africa Conference and the Distinguished African Lecture Series both convened by Dr. Toyin Falola, and Ethnic and Third World Literatures graduate program and Sequels Symposium coordinated by Dr. Barbara Harlow.  Research in African Studies at the University of Texas is also supported by the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center with extensive African collections concentrated on West and Southern Africa.
