"Vamos a Platicar': Elementary Bilingual Teachers’ Reflections on Facilitating Mathematical Discussions with English Language Learners"
Educational research states that students should be learning mathematics through problem solving and mathematical discussions. In practice, however, what occurs in most classrooms little resembles suggestions for students to “conjecture, discuss, analyze and reflect”. For this portfolio plática, Luz A. Maldonado reflects on three third grade bilingual teachers who were documented as they navigated concerns and questions about standardized testing, understanding students’ thinking, language acquisition, classroom management, and what it means to facilitate a discusión in mathematics.
