"Waking the 'Sleeping Giant'?: The Role of Immigrant Rights Coalitions in Mobilizing Protest"
Much has been written about the 2006 pro-immigrant rights mobilizations in terms of the scale and scope, the role of the Spanish-speaking media, and the role of the Catholic Church. Absent from this discourse is the role of Immigrant Rights Coalitions (IRCs). The 2006 mobilizations and IRCs signaled something old and new in the Immigrant Rights Movement. IRCs are old in that they have been in place for many years but in 2006 there was an explosion of coalition organizing and mobilizing immigrants, and allies throughout the country. For this portfolio plática, Hortencia Jiménez provides four case studies of IRCs that formed in 2006 to show that there is a strong relationship between the 2006 mobilizations and the formation of IRCs.
