"Fabricating Friars and Mysterious Missions: Adolfo Carrillo, Mexican American Manhood, and Competing California Literary Histories"
This portfolio plática, by Alberto Varon, will focus on representations of Mexican American manhood as a nexus for competing legal, cultural and social discourses in fin-de-siècle California. This presentation will interrogate the various ways in which citizenship and national gender ideologies converge around the popular mythos of the “Spanish fantasy heritage” and will trace the emergent cultural memory's role in mediating regional and national belonging. Recovering the work of Mexican expatriate Adolfo Carrillo, this talk will suggest how multilingual American literature reveals a national culture informed by multiple transnational cultural circuits.
