Latino Faculty, Staff, and Student Mixer
Wed, October 5, 2011 • 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM • Ballroom (2.412), Student Activity Center, The University of Texas at Austin
Kappa Delta Chi Sorority, Inc. prides itself on producing, enhancing, and cultivating leadership. We are hosting a Latino Faculty, Staff and Student Mixer (LFSSM) to raise awareness throughout The University of Texas at Austin campus about current issues affecting the Latina/o community both at-large and on-campus by creating dialogue among students, staff and faculty members. This year’s theme is "Latinos de Impacto: The Political Impact of the Latino Vote." Low voter turnout has long been an issue for the Latina/o community. Voter turnout continues to lessen despite the fact that Latinos are an exponentially growing population in the United States. The numbers alone indicate the great possibilities that could come if Latinos were more politically active. The purpose of this year’s event is to encourage an increased involvement in the political process. For this purpose, we will have State Representative Joaquin Castro (D-TX), who himself is a "Latino de Impacto", speak at the event in order to inspire the audience to take the initiative in the political realm. This event hopes to serve as a model to demonstrate the effects of positive, open dialogue among students, staff and faculty so that other issues of equal importance may be addressed now or in the future by any student organization.
