Rethinking Power & Resistance: Gender & Human Rights from Texas to the Transnational Americas

Come connect with community organizers and activist scholars from the Americas to talk about TRANSGENDER JUSTICE, GENDER/RACE & CRIMINALIZATION, INDIGENOUS LAND RIGHTS, ARTS AS ADVOCACY, and more. The "Rethinking Power & Resistance: Gender & Human Rights from Texas to the Transnational Americas" conference invites participants to be in dialogue and features discussions with transgender rights activist MISS MAJOR, with indigenous rights lawyer MAYRA GOMEZ, with graffiti and graphic design artist TOOFLY, and with hip hop activists INVINCIBLE and LAH TERE. The conference closes with a women in hip hop event benefitting the Austin-based Mamas of Color Rising.

This conference is a project of the Center for Women's and Gender Studies Embrey Women's Human Rights Initiative at The University of Texas at Austin. The conference is co-sponsored by community organizations: allgo: Statewide Queer People of Color Organization, Quilombola (formerly Austin Black and Brown Alliance), Hutto Visitation Program, Indigenous Women's Network/Alma de Mujer, Mamas of Color Rising, and Texas after Violence Project. The conference is co-sponsored by UT Austin units: Center for Asian American Studies, Center for Mexican American Studies, Community Engagement Center, Department of English, Gender and Sexuality Center, Humanities Institute, Institute on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Lozano Long Institute for Latin American Studies, Native American and Indigenous Studies, Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice, and University of Texas Libraries.
