Romanian Film Series: "Child's Pose (Pozitia Copilului)"
Sun, March 30, 2014 • 2:00 PM • Marchesa Theater (6226 Middle Fiskville Rd)
This is the first film in the Austin Film Society's series "Riding the Wave: Romania's Newest and Finest," which will present films from the Romanian New Wave of the late 2000s that were made by the first generation of Romanian directors after the collapse of the Ceauşescu regime. Now equipped with the tools, education and political freedom to express themselves, these directors made up for decades of artistic repression by creating brilliant cinema. Check out the flyer for this film series here!
In "Child's Pose (Pozitia Copilului)," upon seeing a way to reassert control over her adult son's life when he faces manslaughter charges, an affluent Romanian woman sets out on a campaign of emotional and social manipulation to keep him out of prison, navigating the waters of power, corruption and influence. The mother's character is quite familiar, but this film is unique in that the director delicately portrays how the controlling mother wants to deny that her son is destined to leave her by following the characters' emotional flows and gazing at their twisted desires. Heading to the conclusion, this film shows that the unhealthy mother-son relationship is not that simple when it comes to matters of humane duty.
