Also, please re-read these tips from an Admissions Committee Representative:
  1. "Submit the Texas Common Application EARLY.  DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE DEADLINE!  The automated requests for letters of recommendation do not go out until you submit the online application (see Tip #4).  If you wait until the deadline, your letters of recommendation will be submitted after the deadline - and therefore LATE.  Our recommendation is to submit your application 2-3 weeks before the deadline, so that your references will have plenty of time to write.  Late applications will not be considered.
  2. When you apply to any graduate program take advantage of the Statement of Purpose.  Use the statement of purpose to tell the Admissions Committee as much as possible about you.  Who are you?  How will you contribute to the diversity of our program?  What do you want to study?  How will the Center for Women's and Gender Studies at the University of Texas at Austin facilitate your course of study? Be clear of your goals and what the graduate program can provide to meet those goals.  If applicable, reference faculty that you would like to work with and explain how their research matches your research interests.  Avoid too much "story telling" (i.e. "I knew I was interested in _______ at the age of 3, etc."), but rather explain how personal experience(s) have shaped your academic & career goals.  Check your spelling and grammar.  Avoid writing cliches like, "I've been a feminist ever since I was born" or  "Webster's Dictionary defines _____ as..."  Be thoughtful and don't use the same Statement of Purpose if you are applying to more than one graduate program (except in the case of a dual degree program). 
  3. Study for the GRE.  Most students who qualify for fellowships have scores in the top 10 percentile (for example 600 or more on the older version of the GRE) in each of the Verbal and Quantitative sections.  Be sure to use the exact same name and date of birth on your GRE as on your application.  A mis-match will seriously delay your scores.  Same goes for the TOEFL or any other standardized test you may have to take.  If you have questions, please contact the Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC).
  4. Obtain good letters of recommendation.  Try to get a majority of references from academic sources.  The admissions committee will wonder if you are not able to obtain letters from former faculty.  A letter of recommendation from a former employer doesn't really help assess your academic skills.  When you submit the contact information of your references as part of the Texas Common Application, - an automated email requesting a letter of recommendation will be sent to them.  The automated email will contain instructions on how to submit their letter of recommendation online.  It is a good idea to let your references know to check their junk mail filters for this automated message.
  5. Submit a good writing sample.  A paper you wrote in a former class would work.  Do not cite wikipedia as a reference.  If possible, your research should come from primary sources.  Our admissions committee is made up of mostly professors from Liberal Arts, so a photo essay or a breezy paper on pop-culture might not make a big impression.  Try to show off your analytical writing and critical thinking skills as much as possible.  (If you do not have a paper that is at least 15 pages long, you may submit two papers in order to meet the page length requirement.)
  6. Applicants have the ability to upload PDFs to the online system AFTER they have submitted the Texas Common Application and paid the GIAC Application fee.  Applicants should upload PDF materials that are required by the CWGS office.  Applicants will also be able to monitor which materials have been submitted on the online status check (Check My Status tool) after they have paid their application fee.
  7. Everything is due December 15th (see Tip #1).  Please be mindful of the holidays and the end of semester rush.  We recommend you submit your online application and application fee 2-3 weeks before the deadline.
