Profiles in Language Teaching at UT: Dr. Fehintola Mosadomi

Teaching Philosophy

A teacher is made on earth, not gifted from heaven. This statement is true to my perception of myself as a teacher because I mold myself through three tenets of teaching:  passion, striving for excellence, and creativity.

A teacher who is not passionate about teaching cannot engage well in the classroom. Teaching, nurtured with experience, is an innate ability that allows me to connect emotionally with my students and engage them in an idyll world in which they revel and thrive with eagerness to learn. The use of humor through short anecdotes of life or personal experience that relate to learning experience allows me to engage and nurture well in the classroom. Nurturing from a teacher is a totality of educational package that goes beyond learning in the classroom.

Striving for Excellence

Understanding the process of learning and the nature of the learner allow me to bring out the best in students. The assignments that I create engage students in critical problem-solving skills that help them learn maximally through team-work and individual performances, which in turn instill in students a sense of confidence and high esteem.

My creative and dramatic nature reflects on my students’ performances. In my Yoruba classroom, at the end of the semester, I introduce ten-minute student presentations, in which they demonstrate through technology their creativity on a given topic. This activity excites students a lot. Another excitement, for example, in the Yorùbá language class is the use of tongue twisters (which is the part of the audio files) in my Yorùbá grammar text (Yorùbá Yé Mi) to learn/teach tones. The tongue twisters are part of the teaching methods I developed to create a rich, engaging student-centered, communicative, and collaborative learning environment that is necessary for successful teaching. These tongue twisters have been turned into mini dramas and the videos are up on YouTube. To view the videos please visit:

Yorúbà language resource: Yorúbà Yé Mi - A Beginning Yorúbà Textbook

COERLL, a federally funded foreign language resource center specializing in Open Educational Resources (OER) for the Internet public, released its newest interactive language textbook, Yorúbà Yé Mi - A Beginning Yorúbà Textbook. The online textbook is available to the public for free and includes an affordable print-on-demand option.

"Project Director Dr. Fehintola Mosadomi has put her years of pedagogical experience to work in developing this Yorùbá textbook," says Carl Blyth, Director of COERLL.  "I am especially excited that COERLL has produced this textbook as an Open Educational Resource.  Print-on-demand technology makes perfect sense for publishing materials in less commonly taught languages."

Yorúbà Yé Mi is a communicative, introductory, multi-media program intended to provide college/university students with basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in Yorùbá.  In addition, it exposes the learner to the culture of the Yorùbá-speaking people of South-western Nigeria.
