How Far Can Autonomy Go? Implementing Learning Stations in Language Classrooms
In practice, Maria Montessori’s radical idea of managing a classroom through autonomous learner choices has few proponents in varying academic settings. Long term implementations of “learning stations” in language classrooms are also rather uncommon, likely due to lack of experience with the matter. Focusing on an implementation of learning stations in Fall 2013 in intermediate German classes, this talk allows attendees to see stations in action, walks them through their production, and highlights benefits and problems of the method. A comparison of the recent experience with applications in beginning German classes in two different settings concludes the talk, suggesting some factors that facilitate success with learning stations.
