American Literature

Some thirty faculty members teach graduate courses and publish in American literature – or, more accurately, in the literatures and literary history of the United States and the theories, practices, products, and institutions of culture in America. The Americanist group offers courses that span American literary periods and genres. Its greatest strengths lie in the Nineteenth Century – where varied literary interests and critical methods, represented by the work of Barrish, Carton, Cvetkovich , Hutchison, Kevorkian, Murphy, and Winship, both complement and challenge one another – and in the Twentieth Century – where creative writers and scholars such as Barrish, Bremen, Carter, Casares, Cohen, Cox, Friedman, González, Heinzelman, Hinojosa-Smith, Jones, Lee, Limón, Perez, Richardson, Wilks, and Woodard represent the full scope of ethnic American literatures: African American, Asian American, Caribbean, Chicana/o, Latina/o, Native American.

Students specializing in American literature at the University of Texas will find mentors in whatever field of American Literature they wish to pursue: from New England intellectual history to ethnic studies; from bibliography, textual criticism, new media, and the history of the book to popular culture; from American literary realism to modernist poetics and fiction; from gender and sexuality studies to twentieth century literatures; from modern and contemporary American drama to American poetry and poetics to American literature and critical theory.
