Rhetoric

The Rhetoric and Writing concentration in the English Department at the University of Texas at Austin is a prestigious doctoral program with an excellent placement rate, numerous alumni ranked among the leaders of the discipline, an engaged, collegial, and productive faculty, and a broad range of teaching and administrative opportunities for students.

The faculty, one of the largest and most productive in North America, has particular strength in composition theory, history of rhetoric, ethnic and gendered discourse, digital literacies, discourse analysis, literacy, pedagogy, and rhetorical theory.

Seminars in rhetoric and writing include a mix of history, theory, and application, as illustrated in the list of previous offerings. Students regularly supplement their coursework in rhetoric with related courses in the departments of anthropology, classics, computer science, education, linguistics, philosophy, and speech communication. Distinguished faculty in the core program and these supporting disciplines lend the Texas rhetoric concentration an unequalled scope and strength.

In any given year, about 15 graduate students are pursuing degrees in the specialization. What's more, students specializing in other areas of English studies regularly draw upon the rich resources of the program in their coursework and their projects. As illustrated by the profiles of current students, students in Rhetoric and Writing write dissertations relying on a variety of methods--discourse analysis, ethnography, quantitative, textual analysis on topics in history, theory, and practice (community, pedagogical, political).

Students gain experience in planning and administering writing programs by teaching writing courses for the Department of Rhetoric and Writing (DRW) and serving as consultants in the Undergraduate Writing Center (UWC). 

Students with an interest in writing technology frequently teach in state-of-the-art networked-computer classrooms belonging to the Digital Writing and Research Lab (DWRL). The DWRL has a long history of innovative research and development. Graduate students assigned to research or staff positions in the DWRL have opportunities to carry out research on hypertext/hypermedia and literature, multi-media applications in literature and film, and other forms of electronic textuality.

The Rhetoric and Writing concentration has an excellent placement history. Our alumni are among the leaders of the discipline, deeply involved in scholarship, innovative teaching and national policies on writing instruction.
