The University of Texas Geography Society is an undergraduate student group dedicated to providing a fun social outlet for students interested in geography, support for participation in undergraduate research, and professional development through speaker series, k-12 educational outreach, workshops, internships, and volunteer opportunities. Joy first became interested in the dynamics of food after taking the life-altering class, "Food, Cuisine and Kitchenspace" as an undergraduate student. She holds a BA in Geography and Spanish from the University of Texas. Before joining SFC, Joy served as a representative of the U.S. Peace Corps in Bolivia for two years. She directed a town-wide recycling program and taught nutrition courses. Joy began working at SFC in 2007. She’s a strong proponent of improving cooking skills and confidence among individuals so that they have the ability to positively shape their health while at the same time. Additionally, she’s passionate about helping shape health policy that will have an even larger impact on the broader community. She is currently working towards a certificate in Culinary Arts from Austin Community College and is a member of the American Public Health Association. When not planning her next meal, she enjoys anything outdoors and traveling off the beaten path.
During her presentation, Joy will be talking about how her interests led her to pursue a degree in geography from the University of Texas, how it influenced her post collegiate experiences and how she has applied it to her career.
