The Undergraduate Program
Welcome to the undergraduate program of the Department of Sociology at The University of Texas at Austin! The UT Department of Sociology currently serves as the academic home for over 600 undergraduate majors. We place tremendous value on our core training in sociological theory as well as methods and statistics at the B.A. level. We build on that core with a variety of course offerings in areas such as criminology and deviance, demography, education, family, gender, health, political sociology, race and ethnicity, and social stratification.
Our undergraduate alumni go on to some of the leading graduate programs and law schools around the country, or on to very productive careers in state and local governments, the private sector, and the non-profit sector. Our students actively participate in research activities alongside faculty members, with the Sociology Honors Program and the Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) Sociology Honors Society serving as the cores of our upper-division student activity. Our students have also recently created and developed Sociological Insight, a national, peer-reviewed journal of undergraduate sociological research. Please see the Sociology Organizations website for more information.
The Undergraduate Advising Office is located in CLA 1.216. Advising hours are Monday-Friday 9:00 am - 12:00pm and 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm. The Undergraduate Advisor is Debbie Rothschild. We encourage you to come by so we can provide a sense of the excitement, opportunities, and career options that are open to Sociology majors!
