Expertise: Our group focuses on engineering biology to produce organic molecules of interest such as biofuels, commodity and specialty chemicals and protein pharmaceuticals.  Specifically, our lab alters cells and “hijacks” the basic metabolism to convert cellular systems into industrially-relevant biochemical factories.  We utilize a variety of host systems including microbial (eg. Eschericia coli), fungal (eg. the yeasts Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Yarrowia lipolytica), and mammalian cells (eg. Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells and human HEK293).  To accomplish these tasks, traditional pathway engineering approaches are merged with novel synthetic biology tools, protein engineering strategies, systems biology paradigms and applied genetic engineering capabilities.  Our research group focuses on the integration and implementation of these tools and knowledge for the design, production, and elicitation of phenotypes relevant to biotechnological processes and medical interest.  In addition, we are heavily invested in developing novel synthetic biology approaches aimed at increasing our capacity to engineer cells.

This is critical framework required for establishing quantitative relationships in these complex multiscale materials. We also work closely with other research groups focused on theory and simulation to both guide and advance our understanding of the experiments when appropriate.

Expertise: My research program explores the relationship between polymer structure, processing and properties. More specifically, we study the effect of polymer structure on the solubility, diffusivity, and permeability of small molecules in polymers and polymer-based materials. These fundamental studies bear directly upon membranes for liquid, gas, and vapor separations; controlled drug delivery devices and techniques; barrier plastics for food and specialty packaging; monomer and solvent removal from formed polymers; and physical aging of glassy polymeric materials and membranes.

Expertise: My research focus is to develop a theoretical and computationally-based program aimed at elucidating the fundamental mechanisms underlying the design of novel, self-assembled advanced materials. The goal is to complement the research of experimentalists (synthetic chemists, chemical engineers, and material scientists) by providing simple but quantitative guidelines to rationally design and synthesize these materials. Towards this broad objective, our group’s research focuses on the development and use of a wide variety of tools spanning both equilibrium and nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, conventional fluid mechanics, molecular rheology and computational tools to complex fluids and biological systems.

Adam Heller
Research Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, Cockrell School of Engineering
heller@che.utexas.edu
+1 512 471 8874, +1 512 471 8795

Expertise: Dr. Heller's study of the physical chemistry of inorganic oxyhalide solutions resulted in the first neodymium liquid lasers (1964-1967) and in the lithium thionyl chloride battery (1973), one of the earliest lithium batteries, remaining in use in medical and defense systems where 20 year shelf life, high energy density and a broad operating temperature range are required. His studies of photoelectrochemical solar cells resulted in 11.5 percent efficient solar cells (1980) and in 11 percent efficient hydrogen evolving photoelectrodes. His related studies of photoelectrocatalysis established that the rate of photo-assisted oxidation of organic matter on photocatalytic titanium dioxide particles was controlled by the rate of reduction of adsorbed oxygen by trapped electrons. He established the field the electrical wiring of enzymes (1988-2005), the electrical connection of their catalytic redox centers to electrodes, and built with wired enzymes the subcutaneously implanted miniature glucose sensors. His wired enzymes became the core technology of the FreeStyle NavigatorTM system of Abbott Diabetes Care; it continuously and accurately monitors subcutaneous glucose levels in diabetic people.

Expertise: Interests include the broad areas of polymer science and engineering and chemical engineering. Current research involves various aspects of polymeric materials including polymer blends; membranes for separations, drug delivery, packaging, etc.; and polymer processing.  The blend research deals with the thermodynamics of polymer-polymer interactions (miscibility, phase diagrams, interfaces), reactive compatibilization of multiphase mixtures, rubber toughening, the control of phase morphology during processing by both chemical and physical means, and polymeric nanocomposites.  The research on diffusion in polymers involves investigation of structure-property relationships to design better membranes for separation processes and improved barrier materials plus an interest in theories and models for describing sorption and permeation of small molecule penetrants in polymers including the rubbery, glassy, semi-crystalline, and liquid crystalline states of these materials.  The research on nanocomposites involves devising chemical and processing strategies for exfoliating layered silicates in polymer matrices for improvement of performance using nanoscale reinforcement.  Synthesis, characterization, and performance of polymers are an integral part of the research in all these areas.
