Denise A. Spellberg's research in intellectual, religious, and gender history focuses on the medieval Islamic world, from Iran to North Africa, and also on Islam and Muslims in early modern and contemporary Europe and the United States. In addition to the department of History, Dr. Spellberg is affiliated with Program in Islamic Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, Medieval Studies, American Studies, and Religious Studies. Her books include "Politics, Gender, and the Islamic Past (1994) " and "Thomas Jefferson’s Qur’an: Islam and the Founders" (2013), which has been translated into Indonesian and Arabic. She is currently working on her third book "‘A’isha and the Islamic Historical Tradition: A Life" and "Politics, Gender, and the Islamic Past: The Legacy of ‘A’isha bint Abi Bakr," which will be published by Columbia University Press.
